Break Boundaries in MSP

Alex Miller
Municipal Graduate Engineer, WSB & Associates
What problem(s) are you working to solve?
I am working to solve infrastructure problems in local cities and to help them spend their money efficiently in solving those issues.
What makes the Minneapolis and Saint Paul region (MSP) a great place to grow your career?
MSP is a great place to grow a career because you can find people who are passionate and involved in almost anything. Being a “smaller” city, we don’t have that “rat race” feeling. We are more of a community. And we have the benefits of being a forward-minded urban center which is a great balance.
What do you think surprises people about MSP?
That we really are an international city! We get overshadowed by Chicago and the fact that we are “way up north” sometimes means we are an afterthought, but we have a lot of the great benefits of a true international city without the hassles.
What advice do you have for women engineers starting in their careers?
Be genuine. You don’t have to do things the way the people before you did or the ones above you are doing now. You can put your own spin on things, and in fact, you should!
