MSP Cultural Spotlights helps shine a light on culturally-relevant spaces, businesses and amenities across the Greater Minneapolis-Saint Paul region (MSP) with a focus on those owned by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). We hope individuals will be able to create new connections in spaces that celebrate and elevate diverse cultures.

Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It is also often observed for celebrating African American culture. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it has been celebrated annually on June 19th in various parts of the country since 1866.

Introducing Hodon (she/her)

From Somalia to Yeman to California, Hodon has made the MSP region her home for the past seven years.

However, as a child, Hodon’s journey to America with her family was abrupt due to the civil war in Somalia. At that time, Hodon was the oldest of her six siblings and considers her mom a hero for escaping violence and enduring a traumatic escape while pregnant and leading five young children.

Hodon is a mother and a seasoned teacher at the only Islamic school in the metro area called Al-Amal.

Hodon has since embraced and was welcomed by the Somali community here in Minneapolis/Saint Paul.

Sasha opens up about her experience living with HIV/AIDS and how she gives back and educates the community about this. With her powerful presence and voice, Sasha aims to make a difference in the community.

Sasha shares her experience in MSP during these COVID-19 times, the impact of George Floyd’s death and more.

Kawaskii has been in MSP for majority of this life. From North Minneapolis to Saint Paul, he is quite familiar with the Twin Cities.

As the Director of Finance at @mediabridgeadvertising, Kawaskii explains the struggles of making his way into the corporate world as black man. The former athlete now sits on the board of @achievempls and is also a Youth Mentor for @naba_twincities — he is especially dedicated to making our community a better place for MN youth.

With all of his achievements, Kawaskii has been selected as a @mspbusinessjournal #40under40 honoree!

Kawaskii shares his experience in MSP as a black man, the impact of George Floyd’s death and more.

With a passion to do hair and make people feel beautiful, Melissa opened a salon that continues to thrive today.

Sergio (he/him) traded the Cancun, Mexico sunshine for MSP winters in 2013 to attend @gustavusadolphuscollege and play @gustieathletics football.

With help from Gustavus staff, Sergio was able to obtain his one year work visa. Though the process was lengthy, Sergio decided to stay and renew!

The Saint Louis Park resident shares life after graduation, his experience during the pandemic, and what made him to decide to stay in the MSP region.

Brandon loves MSP (Same!) and he collectively credits the state of MN, his father’s resourcefulness and a network of supportive organizations within for helping him succeed!

Born and raised in MN, Brandon does not plan on leaving. In fact, The @umntwincities alumnus wants to give back to the community!

The @umntwincities and @uofstthomasmn grad took her learnings and talents to the University of Minnesota to work as their Grant Director for a federal TRIO program.
