Celebrating Community and Empowering BIPOC Women

In Sisterhood, We Brunch (ISWB) is a brunch series dedicated to creating space for healing and uplifting Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) women, businesses, entrepreneurs and professionals.

Founded by Cheniqua Johnson, Amanda Koonjbeharry and Jhaelynn Elam, this BIPOC women-led space and event fosters connections to increase social and political capital. This idea for this space came out of a need for folks to connect and unpack the stress and trauma many BIPOC women in the community faced in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and murder of George Floyd. While ISWB helps bolster professional connections, it also serves as a crucial part of community building and fellowship. Ultimately, their goal is to empower Black and Brown women and continue to create a supportive and safe space for the community.

The overwhelming support and participation in their inaugural brunch has shown that there was a need for a community space for folks to gather in fellowship with each other, especially amongst other Black and Brown women. Ieesha McKinzie Collins, of ConnextMSP, attended the first brunch and spoke about her experience.

“Attending the In Sisterhood We Brunch Event was a fantastic breath of fresh air as a Black woman leading work in the MSP region. More and more we need the opportunity to connect with like-minded women who are focused on personal growth, positivity and connecting with one another. I believe that the In Sisterhood, We Brunch platform is going to be a place to continue building relationships with other women who look like me in our region.”

What’s Next for ISWB

This past April, ISWB was featured alongside 20 other startups at BETA MN‘s Spring Showcase. Getting the chance to connect with other startups and entrepreneurs are important when it comes to becoming a successful resource for folks in the Twin Cities and this was an opportunity for creators and founders, alike, to connect with each other and build community.

The brunch series will continue throughout the year with events happening on Saturday, June 4th and August 27th. Both brunches will feature a guest speaker, large selection of food and brunch inspired cocktails! Free headshots will also be available at the June brunch with every ticket purchase.
