Minneapolis and Saint Paul’s premier winter events have joined forces to celebrate the best of the season together.
The Great Northern festival kicks off this Thursday, January 24th! The Great Northern celebrates winter in Minneapolis and Saint Paul by promoting a positive mindset and healthy, active, outdoor lifestyle. They bring together legacy festivals and original programming, all highlighting Minnesota at its wintry best with an accessible, family-friendly focus.

Join The Great Northern, Make It. MSP., Saint Paul Saints and Jonathan Chapman | JCP for an evening of film, conversation, and community. We’ll watch a local short documentary that follows a musher family from Finland, Minnesota and we’ll take a journey to discover the real meaning of hygge.
Featured films will include:
The film profiles Blake and Jennifer Freking, a musher family from Finland, Minnesota who care for 60+ purebred Siberian Huskies.
Hygge has exploded in popularity amidst growing division and distrust around the world, but the Danish word and its definition are more complicated than it seems. For those who seek happiness, this exploratory documentary travels around the globe to discover the true meaning of hygge and how to find it.
This event is free and open to the public.

Saint Paul Winter Festival: January 24th through February 3rd
Saint Paul’s beautiful and historic Kellogg Mall Park acts as center stage for the 2109 Saint Paul Winter Carnival. Activities will include the signature ice sculpture garden, ice bars, live music and other special activities. Come to downtown Saint Paul and check out the variety of events and activities hosted in Kellogg Mall Park.
U.S. Pond Hockey Tournament: January 25th-27th
Since 2006, the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships have given hockey enthusiasts a premier resource for experiencing hockey the way nature intended. Our event is uniquely Minnesotan, and 100% hockey.
Minnesota Tech State of the State: January 29th
Last October, Forbes named the Twin Cities a “Top 10 Rising Cities for Startups.” Join us for a networking happy hour followed by a panel discussion. This event will bring together a mix of founders, investors, media and recognizable mover-shakers to discuss the unique challenges and opportunities that got us to the current state of tech in Minnesota, and where we go from here.
Luminary Loppet: February 2nd
The Luminary Loppet is an annual tradition in Minneapolis that brings people together to experience the wonder of winter in Minnesota with 1,200 candle-light luminaries illuminating Lakes of the Isles. This celebration features many spectacles including an ice pyramid, fire dancers, an enchanted forest, and much more. Skiers, walkers, and snowshoers can all enjoy this magical outdoor event. Plus warm up with a cup of cocoa along the way, or with a Surly beer at REI’s Luminary Party. Features include an ice forest, illuminated penguins puppets, and an ice music concert!
